University of Chicago Child Care Development Center

To support the children and families within the University and Medical Center community, the University of Chicago turned to Leopardo to provide full preconstruction and construction services for their new child development center on the east side of campus. Operated by Bright Horizons, a leading provider of early education and employer-sponsored child care, the center has a capacity of 124 children ages six weeks to five years. This LEED Gold-certified, cutting-edge facility includes:

  • WINNER: 2014 AIA/CAE Educational Facility Design Award
  • Winner: 2015 USGBC-Illinois Emerald Green Building Innovation Award
  • 13,300-SF, one-story daycare center that consists of classrooms, gross motor playroom and associated administrative and support spaces
  • Unique building features include tree bark siding, unpainted cement board siding and a gently folded roof
  • Outdoor natural play areas that include several monumental boulders and a gabion multicolored stone fence
  • All related site improvements including utility services, new parkway and permeable pavers
  • Site logistic challenges due to the adjacent structures and railroad tracks
  • Sustainable features of the LEED Gold-certified project include:
    • Green roof system
    • Daylighting for 90% of the space
    • Recycled content, sustainable and low-emitting materials, as well as regionally-sourced materials were used
    • High-efficiency fixtures
    • Diverted 75% of materials from landfill
    • 75% of the roof contains high reflectance and high emissivity materials
