Leopardo Cuts Ribbon on New Affordable Housing Complex

Leopardo recently completed the new Independence Branch Library and Apartments, a six-story, LEED Gold-seeking structure located at 4022 N. Elston Ave. that uniquely bundles a public library with affordable housing.

The opening of the apartment complex was marked by a ribbon cutting on Monday, September 23 and attended by Leopardo Vice President Mike Mastin, Chicago Department of Housing Commissioner Marisa Novara, as well as numerous representatives from the Chicago Housing Authority, the Chicago Public Library, Evergreen Real Estate, John Ronan Architects and the City of Chicago. A ribbon cutting for the opening of the library portion was held in January 2019 and attended by then Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and other local dignitaries. The project has also been honored with the ENR Midwest Project of the Year award.

“Leopardo is proud to have been a part of such an innovative development that will enrich the lives and minds of community members for many years to come,” said Mike Mastin.

The new apartment complex portion occupies the four floors above the library branch and consists of 44 affordable residences for seniors, each of which features a colorful balcony. In addition to the library, tenant amenities include a fitness room and access to the rooftop green space.

The library features an open floor plan with large expanses of natural light, comfortable seating, easily accessible and mobile shelving, group tables, play areas and a community room. The building also includes a graduated seating staircase, rooftop terrace and garden, as well as a parking structure with a park-like area off the second floor with spaces for library patrons.

Leopardo collaborated with Evergreen Real Estate and John Ronan Architects on the project.
